Chandler House, Brisbane

A detailed construction for a large home in south Brisbane designed by Hogg&Lamb Architects.  The rammed earth wall is 6.6m high with numerous cut outs, forming the central core of the house. It runs from inside to outside.  Michael Hogg described the finished rammed earth as "travertine like" (see his close up photo).

The house received a Commendation at the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects Brisbane Regional Awards. The Commendation cites the rammed earth as an important component: “The monumental rammed earth wall anchors the spaces to the ground plane, whilst carefully considered apertures are carved to pass through, inviting engagement with the unique material and offering a delicate display of light and shadow.”

Finished house photos are by Christopher Frederick Jones.
