Project Overview
A "future-proofed" two-storey residence in North Maleny on the Sunshine Coast, built in rammed earth and recycled timber. Thoughtfully designed for a lifetime of living, the home combines the warmth of natural materials with genuine, considered accessibility.
Project Story
Design intent
The home was conceived to adapt to its owners' future needs, with wide corridors and provision for a live-in carer built in from the start, so the house can grow old gracefully alongside the people in it.
Key features
A sloping block is turned to advantage: ground-level access is available from the rear, while a lift connects the entry/garage level to the upper floor, giving full disabled access throughout the two storeys.
Use of rammed earth
Rammed earth provides the home's thermal mass and material character, working in concert with recycled timber to create interiors that feel warm, solid and naturally comfortable.
Relationship to site
The design responds directly to the contours of the Maleny hinterland, using the slope to create level access rather than fighting it.
