Project Overview
Built for a young family, Avonlea occupies a commanding elevated hillside site in the heart of Eumundi. In 2016, Rammed Earth Constructions built the rammed earth walls for three of the four homes within the subdivision, with Avonlea later receiving a Commendation for Residential Design at the 2018 Architecture Awards.
The home celebrates the Eumundi district's distinctive red earth, incorporating it into the rammed earth walls that define the southern side of the long linear residence. Beyond their striking appearance, the walls provide excellent thermal mass while also acting as an acoustic buffer, shielding the home from the nearby primary school and market traffic. The result is a home that is both deeply connected to its local landscape and thoughtfully designed for comfortable family living.
Project Story
Of "Avonlea," the jury wrote: built for a young family on a commanding site, with "a material palette of rammed earth, steel and glass," the linear, north-oriented home frames Cooroy Mountain. "The razor-sharp steel roof… provides shelter and shade… and in its fineness provides contrast to the heaviness of the rammed earth."
