The rammed earth walls with coloured concrete floors provide
thermal mass for this family home, which maintains a fairly
stable internal temperature throughout the year. It incorporates
passive solar design features such as northern orientation,
whirlybirds, wide eaves, window awnings, solar hot water,
and large paved roofed verandah for outdoor living.
The rammed earth also provides an excellent sound, pest and
fire barrier. The rectangular building shape and the placement
of windows and doors allow excellent cross flow ventilation.
The onsite wastewater treatment system provides irrigation
to the native plant screenings. These plantings provide biodiversity
and enhance the surroundings, which had been extensively
cleared. Rainwater is harvested and stored for potable water.
The single storey dwelling does not dominate the landscape.
The materials used are low in embodied energy. It is low
cost both in construction and maintenance.
An inspiring aspect of this home is that it has achieved
a high level of environmental good practice because the owners
designed for a comfortable, practical, economical home which
they planned to be in for the long term, rather than focusing
on architectural impact, environmental issues per se or for
resale. The single level design means that this home is suitable
for children, the elderly and infirm. This is an attractive
affordable family home as well as an excellent example of
sustainable design.
